The Tempest Trailer

Are you ready for another twisted Julie Taymor take on Shakespeare? Disney has debuted the official trailer in blazing high def (via Apple) for Julie Taymor's The Tempest starring Helen Mirren, Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Ben Whishaw, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou and many others. Taymor's movies always look so vivid and epic and extremely wild. I really want to see this because I love seeing Shakespeare's dialogue thrown around in such visually imaginative concepts, I just hope it's actually entertaining. There's so much weird stuff in this trailer, you just need to see it for yourself. Fire it up below!

The Tempest is written & directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Julie Taymor, of the visually unique films Titus, Frida and Across the Universe previously. In this take on The Tempest, the gender of Prospero has been switched to Prospera (Mirren). She is usurped by her brother and sent off with her four-year daughter on a ship. She ends up on an island; it's a tabula rasa: no society, so the mother becomes the father figure to Miranda. This leads to a struggle of power and balance between Caliban and Prospera; a struggle not about brawn, but about intellect. Disney/Miramax is bringing The Tempest to theaters starting December 10th.

Sigur Ros is best.

Buuuuuhhhh...... I'm not sure how this will blow over. Looks like good acting and visually exciting but modern Shakespeare movies seem to have quite the curse on them....unsure if Tempest will turn the tide. Unfortunately, this seems like a movie that will perpetually stay on the bottom of my Netflix queue despite my interest.

Finally, this is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays.

When I heard that Prospero was going to be changed into a woman played by Helen Mirren, I had my misgivings. But after seeing this, I am fully aboard on this project and I can't wait to see it.

I'll wait for the CliffsNotes version......

#1 Agreed. I love Titus, so I am really looking forward to this, looks very stylistic in the way you would expect Julie Taymor to direct it. Though at times you still get that openness is some of the scenes that really let the character protrayal shine through in between the CGI and what sure will be a great contemporary rendition of one of Shakespeares finest.

Ah "Saeglopur" makes everything amazing, in fact anything that uses Sigur Ros makes it amazing. The trailer was amazing, I'm a big fan of "out there" films, looks like something I can compare to The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and place next to it in my DVD collection. Helen Mirren was fantastic, Chris Cooper is a reason to see any movie, Alfred Molina is a great actor as well, I'm in!

The only good thing about this trailer is its use of 'Sæglópur' by Sigur Rós at the end.

Hm. Well oncce I heard Sigur Ros I was hooked! I have the Tempest in my reading collection, just haven't gotten to it yet. The movie looks enchantingly confusing. I'm in!

Looks... interesting, but based on this, no. I'd prefer to judge based on the final product, but the trailer is slapdash, not subtle. The usual trailer method of throwing together visually impressive, funny or even slightly cool bits is not something that can be applied to Shakespeare. You end up with this, a confusing mess that attracts only with shiny special effects. Maybe if I saw a single cohesive scene that flows as Shakespeare's writing does I would be sold, but as it stands, I am not.

For the love of God please let this make Shakespeare more mainstream. It's a crime that people don't appreciate him anymore. This looks AMAZING. And the fact that they're sticking to the text makes me incredibly proud to say that I will pay to see this. Multiple times.

Omg this looks great, Across the Universe ehh but hopefully this will finally open my eyes to what so many others had seen in her directing style. Yes the best part was Sigur Ros ooooohh i fucking love that songs and many from them, there songs are so epic and i was waiting for someone to use them in a trailer there are so perfect for it. but im sold and really excited for some more Russell Brand love that guy.
